Hi,

My wife & I are spending a week at the end of August in the Jura (the French side initially) and are planning to spend 3 nights or so in Switzerland. We'd like to do a bit of hiking, see a few towns, etc. within a reasonable budget.
Where do you think we should stay which would be a good base - Interlaken sounds way too touristy and Zurich sounds even more expensive than other Swiss locations.
Travelling around won't be a problem as we'll be driving our own car.
Any help would be most appreciated.

Why not just stay in the Jura? There are good places to hike and it is not very touristic. Your time is short for too much exploring or long hiking.

"Jura" is really a nice place to stay. You could hike and visit very beautiful cities.
If the weather is good it would be a great idea to go to the lake of neuchatel (which is quite close to the Jura) and maybe bath in the sea.
If you want to go into the mountains I would recommend you to make a one day trip to zermatt or Gstaad, these regions are quite easily reached by train but accomadations there are really expensive (at least 50 CHF per person).

Thanks for the tips - any idea how long it would take to drive from the Jura to Zermatt/Gstaad? It seems a bit far bearing in mind we will be driving all the time.

What do you mean with "the Jura"? The Jura area (about 200 kms long)? The French Departement du Jura? A certain place in the Jura?
Tell us from which town in the French Jura you will come (by car, right?) and we can suggest an itinerary.

it would take about 3-4 hours one way (by train).
Except if you lived at a big train station :D

neckervd - I meant the Jura mountains and I haven't decided which town we'll be coming from (probably Neuchâtel).

Tulbi - As I mentioned before I will be driving and not taking the train (I guess it will take around the same length of time no?)

from neuchatel it takes about 2.5 hours by car...
When you want to go to zermatt your better of with the train...

Neuchatel is neither in France nor in the Jura.
Anyway:
Neuchatel - Taesch (Zermatt parking): 240 km, 180 of them motorway
Neuchatel - Gstaad: 140 km, 70 of them motorway
Neuchatel - Interlaken: 110 km, all motoray

Sorry for confusion on post 6 - it should've read coming across the border on the road which leads to Neuchâtel.
Our initial stay will be in the French side of the Jura mountains - our trip to Switzerland can be anywhere in the western half of the country really.

Thanks for distances - I presume the roads which aren't motorways are still main roads so Gstaad and Interlaken are reachable in a couple of hours.

If anyone has any accommodation tips out there I'd really appreciate it!
