As the title states, I have three days in Switzerland before I make my way to France. I am coming from Vaduz, Liechtenstein and I need to figure out an itinerary. The only must do thing is to visit the Matterhorn! I don't have time nor the health in my back to climb but I do want to get some great snaps. What would you recommend as far as heading out to Zermatt and trying to view this amazing piece of nature!

I was also thinking of seeing Gimmelwald and having a soak in the hot tub while enjoying the mountain views.

Now I could be wrong, but my understanding is that if I miss the big cities or most of them, it's not the end of the world, as lets be honest, the entire country is pretty much mountains!!!

I thought it would be a nice change from the usual cities etc....

However, what else can I do, or where else can I go in Switzerland?

Thanks for all your ideas....

Keep in mind that I am off to Paris and Northern France right after.......

Have a look at http://www.myswitzerland.com/en.cfm/destinations/culture and the numerous links you will find there.
Switzerland has a lot of small medieval towns (some of them entirely walled), gothic cathedrals, baroque churches and monasteries, all kind of good museums (Hystory, Ethnology, Red Cross, Olympics, Transport, Alps, Watchmaking, La Tene Lake dwelling culture ......) Art Galleries, modern architecture (Mario Botta, Herzog&Demeuron, Diener&Diener, Calatrava, Jean Nouvel .....), many lakes with regular boats traffic (Geneva - Lasusanne - Montreux - Chillon, Yverdon - Neuchatel - Murten, Neuchatel - Biel/Bienne - Solothurn, Thun - Interlaken, Interlaken - Brienz, Lucerne - Fluelen, Locarno - Stresa - Arona, Ponte Tresa - Lugano - Porlezza, Zurich - Rapperswil - Schmerikon, Basel - Rheinfelden, Eglisau -Neuhausen/Schaffhausen - Stein am Rhein - Konstanz - Romanshorn - Lindau - Bregenz....), mountain cog railways and cableways in almost every canton, big caves open to the public, big glaciers, waterfalls ....

The most scenic route between Vaduz and Zermatt/Matterhorn is the Glacier Express, a comfortable panoramic train (with dining car) through the heart of the Swiss Alps.

Timetable:
Vaduz dp 9.50 by bus - Sargans ar 10.21, dp 10.33 by train - Chur ar 10.52, dp 11.15 by Glacier-Express - Zermatt ar 16.52.
Zermatt - Visp - Spiez - Interlaken - Lauterbrunnen - Stechelberg - Gimmelwald: trains every hour from 5.39 until 18.39.

Since you want to go to Gimmelwald you will have to pass through Interlaken which has good access to many of the peaks of the Bernese Oberland, and also boats on both lakes, we've spent a week there and hardly began to do all the things on offer. A great thing we did while staying in Interlaken was paragliding in a tandem rig with a pilot. You really don't have much time with three days as you already have committed yourself to two places. There are interesting towns and villages throughout Europe that you can visit, but the Alps are much more restricted. Enjoy them while you can.

Swiss cities and towns are not incredibly MORE interesting than thore in the rest of Europe ;-)

"the entire country is pretty much mountains!!! ": take a look at Google Earth and be ready for the big surpice. The rough picture: Northern third is not mountains at all - middle belt are mostly low "green" mountains - only the border area towards italy are big mountain.

BTW semi isolated old towns in valleys tend to be pittoresque and popular among tourists!
ut it is fine to search things that arn't towns and cities -too few long distance tourists do so in Europe.
