My husband and I are planning around 7 days in Spain in June. We get itchy feet after a few days and don't mind hiring a car and moving around. We like old towns and culture, but we also need a couple of days by the beach chilling.

We're thinking of either
- A few days in Granada and the area, dropping down to Nerja or somewhere on the coast for the beach and a swim. Although if there are any less tacky beaches within an easy drive from Granada, I'm all ears.

or

  • A few days in Seville, taking in Jerez or Cadiz, then dropping down to somewhere on the Costa De La Luz. I'm not sure whereabouts exactly, because we are conscious of the wind. We do like to just lay and read, and don't really want to be sandblasted all day long.

Of course, if there are any other twin centre city + beach trips you recommend in Spain, let me know! But please, not Barcelona. We've been 5 times!
Thanks

Why not Seville & Cadiz, Cadiz has a lovely beach then you have a nice city in the evening.

Thanks. Is the beach in Cadiz too windy to sit on and relax? I really don't know how bad it is.

I have been twice once in March and once in June and it was fine both times, it has a small amount of shelter. If you decide the Granada option then personally I would mix it with Herradura (horseshoe) a much nicer beach than Nerja, and quieter, the town is also nice and you can walk up to the lighthouse on top if the hill. Even further east is the tiny town of La Mamola which is very Spanish and has a small nice beach with not much else to do, but a there bars and restaurants, in June you will not have many neighbours!!

I'd go for Granada, visit Guadix (maybe spend a night in a cave house, they are excellent) and drive down to Cabo de Gata. The beaches there are in a national park, which sets it apart from all other spanish beaches

Costa de la Luz beaches aren't really that nice... unless you're surfing or kiting. The only way it would be better than the med is if you're there during a heatwave, it would be cooler in Costa de la Luz then. I've been to Costa de la Luz twice and wind has been pretty strong both times, but this is a sample of two so take it with a grain of salt

If you want another city, there are plenty of options either way (you're probably gonna fly into Malaga??). This countryside is literally littered in gold - on the Granada side you have Antequera, Cordoba, Alacala la Real, Zuheros, Jaen, Baeza, Ubeda, Cazorla, Alhama de Granada, Almeria, drive up Sierra Nevada to Veleta, etc. On the Seville side you have Ronda, Grazalema (also the road from Zahara de la Sierra to Grazalema - easily one of the most scenic drives in Spain), Arcos de la Frontera, Jerez, Cadiz, etc
