Hi there
We will be travelling with our 13 year old in December. We will be flying to London (from Cape Town) on the 14th and then hope to catch a flight to Madrid soon after. We are quite keen to spend some time in Madrid and then maybe bus/train to Barcelona and then fly from there back to London. Any suggestions on how long we should stay in each city (is a week in Spain too short?). The child is football mad and we need to work in tours of the football stadiums. Also, tips on clean, safe, reasonable family accommodation most welcome.
Thanks!

Yes, a week is too little. But if that's all you have, then divide your time between Madrid and Barcelona. Take one of the fast trains from Madrid to Barcelona. To save time, and if you can afford it, you might think about taking the overnight Trenhotel. See www.renfe.es for details.

Do you know which is the most visited museum in Barcelona? The football museum for the local team. I'm sure your child will like it. Of course, there is much more to see.

Sorry I can't offer any tips on accommodation.

Hi
Yes, a week is short but not too short. Both of the cities are interesting so read up a little and see which one sounds more apealing or just split the time equally. You might even manage a day trip in both cities. Also, you can take a look at some tours. It can lessen the pressure of planning or you can get some itinerary and activity ideas. Here are a few sites: Viator has all kinds of activities, trips and packages for your destinations. Escapade Vacations has shorter and wider tours in Spain including packages for Madrid and Barcelona. Top Tours of Spain (Euro Adventures) has cooking classes, wine tastings, walking tours and other short activities.

Good Luck
