That is why you should use loco2 for train bookings in Spain, Renfe is not user friendly for those who are not residents of Spain.

We had no particular difficulty with it, but I concede that the mileage might vary for other travellers from outside Spain / Europe.

Thank you for all the tips. Per the discussions, we'll probably opt for the cheaper trains since the travel time won't differ too much. We already know on what date we will be traveling to Girona. However, we don't know the exact time yet. I'll have to check Loco2 to see if it's easy to change our tix in case we buy in advance and miss the train/bus or change our minds on the time. Thanks again!

Thanks for your info on Loco2. It's such a user-friendly site.
