hi
i have heard that there are state run classes here in BCN........
does anyone know about them or been to them?
i would need a quite advanced level.
failing this does anybody know of cheapish options that maybe run other several months, rather than intensive.
many thanks lee

Believe or not, suiko, the EOI (escola oficial d'idiomes) of Barcelona, even pertaining to the Generalitat de Catalunya, has Spanish language programs.
I'm not sure if they consider it just yet another "foreing" language or is just a matter of "la pela es la pela" ;-)
leeharris, have a look at these sites:
EOI Drassanes
EOI Vall d'Hebron

well i thought the same, but i knew a couple who took basic classes, i asked them to send me the info but we kind of lost contact.
i am pretty sure she said the classes were free!
so the moral is.........don't be so skeptical!
well, these will not be for free, but not as expensive as private-run schools. The bad point is there will be more pupils per class.
I do not think there are advanced-level free classes. I heard there are free basic classes, but usually aimed to new-arrived migrants. Being Catalan spoken by only about 40% of people in Barcelona, Spanish is logically the first language to be learn by the ones who came here to live, so I guess it will be kind of competition to get one of these. Maybe your friends were lucky... or had good contacts! But I never heard about advanced-level free courses anyway.

yes i did not think it so likely to get more advanced classes for free.
I will also investigate some private tuition, but at the moment my finances are a bit up in the air and so i am trying to be sensible.
if you happen to know of good teachers let me know.
many thanks
lee
no, I don't know any good (or even bad) teachers here in Barcelona.
Maybe others around here may help better on this.
I forget to suggest you searching for the Universities of Barcelona (UB, UAB, Pompeu Fabra) as probably these have Spanish courses too.
Another good resource of info about Barcelona is the expat's magazine Metropolitan
good luck, sure you find something suitable. And sure you'll have a great time!
I attended Spanish classes at the Drassanes EOI many years ago. There was a fee, but it was small. The classes were 5 days a week, 2 hours per day. They were very good and I learned a lot. I don't know if it is the same today, so take what I say with "a grain of salt." There were 4 levels; I did 3 and 4. Level 4 was at the "advanced conversation" level; most people could converse pretty well in Spanish. ALL the classes are given in Spanish (the best way to learn and the only way to run it with so many different nationalities in the class). There were two sesssions: one starting in September that ran for about 4 months and one starting in January or February. The biggest problem was matriculating. On the day that signups were opened, there was a long line. I waited several hours, but was able to sign up. Btw, I also studying Russian there and that class was good to. Good luck.
