Hi everyone!

My partner and I are trying to plan a road trip through Spain and Portugal for june/ july 2017

We'll be in Paris and (would like) to make our way to the French Riviera > Bordeaux and begin our Spain/Portugal road trip in San Sebastian.
We want to hire a car either from San Sebastian or Madrid (depending on our France trip itinerary and where we end up in Spain first), drive to Lisbon and return the car to Barcelona.
We're not too strapped for time, but would enjoy the road trip over a week or week and a half.

We both love driving (we've done many road trips in Aus- driving from 6-7 hours a day)- crazy, I know!
But we wanted to go at our own pace- be it quick or slow- and see most of the landscapes and try and budget.

Would anyone recommend a cheaper but of course reliable car hire company, that we can pick up/ return at different locations? I'll also be 25 and he'll be 24 at the time- will this make a surcharge difference?
Are we crazy? Or is this road trip possible?

Thanks in advance :)

Definitely possible and not really a big deal. That said, it doesn't really make sense to pick the car in Madrid and drive to Lisbon and return the car in Barcelona, because Barcelona is in the northeastern corner of the country. If you pick up the car in Madrid, you can do a road trip and then return the car in Madrid (much cheaper than returning in another location), and take the train to Barcelona.

If you have a 1-1,5 weeks you can enjoy quite a bit of the countryside. Trujillo, Caceres, Monasterio de Guadalupe, Marvao, Elvas, Monsaraz, Estremoz, Monsanto, Idanha-a-velha, Piodao, Vale do Zezere in Serra da Estrela, Castelo Rodrigo, Ciudad Rodrigo, etc. Type in some of these in Google images or just google search. Having a car lets you explore places off the gringo trail.
