Will be arriving at Barajas on a separate flight from my friend. I believe my flight comes into Terminal 1, and hers might be arriving at Terminal 4. If everyone is on time, we come in about half an hour apart so would ideally like to meet up before going into Madrid. Is there an easy place for us to do that? I think I arrive before she does, if that makes any difference. Both of these are overseas flights, so would have to go through passport control and customs.

First, look up on the site of the airport operator Aena where your flights arrive - this is based on company:

It is important as T4 is not near the T1-3 terminals.
Each terminal has an "official" meeting point, which is signalled. Decide on the meeting point of which terminal you want to meet, and have a coffee in the bar next door.
