does anyone know what the quality of the camp sites are like in Spain? We have only been camping in France, where the campsites are well maintained and clean, and plentiful. Is it to the same standard in Spain?

Hi, I have camped in Spain once, on the coast in Barcelona, one of those massive sites that are right on the beach. There weren't any grass pitches for tents, you just set up under the trees, but it was fine, and the facilities were great. I should think it depends on where you go, but the coastal sites seems to be pretty much like in France. I work on a campsite in France and we have a lot of people coming up from Spain who all say the standards are good. I'm not sure about the smaller inland sites though.

I like the small municipal sites in France, and there aren't any of them in Spain. The big sites are similar. There aren't nearly as many as in France though, and they tend to be more expensive, as camping is much less of a mainstream activity in Spain.

As a point, we recently had guests who looked into opening a campsite in Spain. It seems the regulations are onerous. Some of the regulations mean you have to have 24-hour security you have to have 24-hour first aid and you cannot refuse to let someone camp in your grounds, even if they are obnoxious and could upset existing clients.
We have no proof of these statements but it may go someway to explain why campsites here are usually so large, they have to cover a lot of costs.

Hi,
I've travelled around France and Spain, and I prefer Spanish camp-sites better than French. Specially in the north of Spain (Girona, Costa Brava, even Costa Dorada). The worst are near BArcelona (some exceptions, of course). I recommend you 2 different campings:
Camping Sant Pol http://www.campingsantpol.com is a small, cosy bungalow park with exuberant vegetation, plenty of flowers, plants and trees. In Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Costa Brava, at 350m from the beach of Sant Pol.
Camping Neus http://www.campingneus.com is also small, a family-camping meant for very quiet people. At only 850m from the beach of Cala Montgó in l'Escala, Costa Brava too.

There are certainly a few nice ones in Spain, but less of the small ones that I like best. Clean and all mod cons, yes, no problem. One big plus is that they tend to have a cafe, so you can get a good caffeine hit early in the morning.
