hi,
im an australian suffering from beach withdrawal syndrome. during my time in spain (in early may) i would like to find a beach that is sandy, not too touristy, in a small town (but one big enough to have a hostel) oh and preferably in a fairly green area, ie with nearby nature trails tall order i know, especially the not too touristy part.
tarifa seems to fit these criteria well enough but being the widsurfing mecca the 2005 LP reckons its too windy be really relaxing for loungin around on the sand. is this accurate? cos i want some relaxing-in-the-sun time not sand-in-the-face, chasing-my-hat-down-the-beach-every-5minutes time. cheap accomodation is also important (but im not really up for camping this trip)
any opinions/suggestions would be fantastic.

You have to check the local weather on the status of "levante" and "poniente" winds, just remember, poniente=good, levante=bad. Nicer lay-out-all-day-with-a-cruzcampo-in-your-hand beaches can be found at nearby Punta Paloma or Bolonia. Tarifa is a great town though to base yourself out of and won't be too touristed in May.

Agreed. I also like Canos de Meca - the cliff shelters you from the wind a bit. Levante = extremely bad :) Causes psychotic behaviours in lab rats....

Tarifa is one of Spain's great overlooked cities in my opinion. While we didn't go to the beach, we loved the city. Near the downtown area is a restaurant called Italia which serves Italian food. I highly recommend it. The owner is very friendly and speaks a little English. You won't regret it. I'm American and I've been to Italy. Here in America, we know Italian food and the food at the Italia restaurant was incredible. There's also an excellent brick oven pizza restaurant in Tarifa, but I don't remember the name of it.
