I will be arriving in Barcelona on Saturday, 14 of October for 4 nights. I would like to stay in a place that is accessible via walking and/or metro to the main attractions in Barcelona. I do not want an expensive place because I am only there to sleep, but I am not young and like my privacy so a hostel or a place without a private bathroom is not for me. If you can make any recommendations for me that would be great.
Also, I would like to go on a day-trip by train out to the mountain-top monastery at Montserrat. What day of the week do you recommend it is best that has the monastery open but not too crowded? I will be in Barcelona on a Saturday/Sunday/Monday/Tuesday all day starting 14 of October. Thank you very much.

Go on booking.com enter your dates, search by price, then look at the map, to be honest in central Barcelona you are never that far from the metro. One of the weekdays would be best, not sure if it is closed on a Monday.

I stayed in a boutique hotel near Passeig di Gràcia; it is called The 8 and is on the second floor (there is an elevator) of a building and it has 8 rooms. I think it corresponds to your description. It is 10 meters from the train station (Passeig di Gràcia) and 50 meter for the Metro of the same name. Google it Also at a walking distance from most of the attractions.

#2 you must be loaded if you think The8 is a cheap option I too have stayed there and it is great but if you €173 a night is cheap then I would love to know what you think is expensive.

You are right, it is not cheap. I forgot that requirement.
