I"m going to Barcelona on July 5-12 and would like to go to Figueres to see the Dali museum. Is it easy to get there from Barcelona. I will be backpacking and is it safe to do that in Spain. Are the hostels in Barcelona and Figueres okay. Is there anyhting else I should see in Barcelona?

Have you ever travelled before? Spain is very safe and a very easy country to backpack around. The people are very friendly and there is a lot to see and do. Are you only planning to be in Barcelona though? Or travelling?

You should buy a guide book and do some research on the internet. Google is a good place to start. There is so much to do in Barcelona.... what you choose to do depends on what you are interested in and how you would like to spend your time. I suggest doing some research and then coming back here with some more specific questions, then you are likely to get helpful responses. Goodluck!

You can visit Figueres as part of a day tour from Barcelona - buses leave from near Placa Catalunya at about 9am. The tour goes to Girona (a wonderful city) in the morning, and Figueres in the afternoon. It wasn't particularly expensive, and you meet nice people on the tour. The tourist info centre can give you more info and sell you a ticket. Don't miss Dali's jewellry exhibition. The entry tickets are included in your tour price. I'm sure the tour company would have a website.

Figueres looked like a pretty dull town, apart from the amazing Dali museum, and i've not heard many exciting things from people who've stayed there.

A good hostal in Barcelona is Hostal Centric. It's only a few minutes walk to the University. Lovely helpful staff, very clean rooms, good prices. I didn't stay in a hostel there so can't recommend any, sorry.

Loads to see in Barcelona - i spent 7 days there - still didn't cover everything and can't wait to go back. Depends what you are into - the museums, architecture, shops, street buskers, interesting old quarter, churches, squares and markets are fantastic, and at night you'll find plenty of great places to eat & drink & party. Get a two day pass for the red and blue tourist bus routes to help you get around and get your bearings. I spent half a day just at the Sagrada Familia.

We took the train from Barcelona to Figueres. It was easy and cheap. The route to the Dal exibit was very well marked. We stopped at Girona on the way back and wandered around the old part of the city.

I would go for the train to Figueres. It passes along the seaside and it is more comfortable than the buses.
Figueres is just the Dali museum and leave. Maybe you can get to Cadaques which is an amazing little mediterranean village but I am not sure if the communications are very fluent to get there from Figueres and come back to Barcelona at the same day.
Girona is a nice stop also, specially for its jewish quarter and the cathedral if you stop on your way to Figueres or back.
Think about what do you want to see as you may spend 4 days visiting one item: parks, architecture, restaurants, museums, shops, etc. As Lemmeout said, be more precise.

I travelled the Figueres and back in one day. It is a bit of a travel time (around 3 hours each way) but do-able if your pressed for time. The Dali museum is a must!

Figueres is prety dull but if you are a Dali's fan I guess a visit to the museum is a must. Once you are in Figueres, I'll definitely recommend taking a bus to Cadaques, a lovely fishing town where Dali lived (you'll recognise the landscape from all his paintings) and where you can visit his house. The rest of the time you should explore Barcelona, one of the most interesting cities in spain. If you don't have much time, the best way to see it is taking one of the free walking tours.
Regarding safety, apart from petty pickpocketing, Barcelona is quite safe so i wouldn't worry about it.
Enjoy yor trip!

#5 and 6, may I take the freedom to recommend that you check the date of a post before replying? The OP was going to Figueres in July 2007. That is, three years ago.
