Good evening,
In a couple of weeks time I am considering travelling with my 5 year old son from Almunecar to visit some friends in Nerac, France (close by Toulouse). I have no fixed ideas at present only that we'd use public tranport, stay at Air B&B's and small hotels with no strict timetable. I've have thought of heading up the coastal road to Montpellier and then onto Nerac, but I think perhaps heading inland to Madrid and Bilbao would be a really interesting trip. I am a sensible, expereinced traveller but have never travelled long distance alone with my child.
Any advice welcome.
Annie

I would start to have a look in https://www.viamichelin.com. The first thing I noted that there seem to be 2 places called Nerac in France and you should indicate which of the two you plan to go to. Putting in Nerac 47600. the website gives me three different routes, two via Madrid and one along the coast and then to Zaragoza. The one along the coast will be the longest and not very interesting, because the sea is in many places behind the tourist-apartment buildings. The road via Madrid is rather boring once in Castilla-la Mancha. Have a look at the website and make up your mind. The road via Madrid and the Basque country is the shortest (not the fastest) and the cheapest as a result of the toll you have to pay.

#1 Read before you post!

OK, but still how much time will you have? 3 days or 3 weeks? What are your interests?
If you travel along the Med coast you can stop in Salou or Tarragona and have fun at the Portaventura theme park.
