Hi,

We will be flying into Barcelona in June and will have 8 full days to spend in Spain. We are looking at taking the train 1-way from Barcelona to another part of Spain and then drive all the way back to Barcelona for our flight home.

We are more interested in villages, beautiful historic medieval towns, castles, mountains, sea rather than big busy cities. Hence, i'm not sure whether to skip Madrid. A part of me feel that we have to visit Madrid since it is the capital of Spain but another part of me prefer a laidback less stressful holiday.

Any suggested itinerary would be much appreciated. Thank you.

There is plenty of what you want in Catalonia..no need to go all the way to Madrid for that (apart maybe from castles, but I guess there are some of those near Barcelona too?).

You have some really nice small towns and villages, the sea, great mountains.....

How about a loop from Barcelona to Malaga-Granada-Alhambra, and back along the coast? Could be a good road-trip.

Renting a car in Spain is always a hassle...Many many links about this., 1 way, drop fees....You ask for trouble..

The Alhambra loop suggested is a good one , I would include Sevilla over Malaga, though I would also go towards the French border for some picturesque places

I understand that Goldcar is the car rental company in Spain that YOU MUST AVOID.

I can't verify this personally, but lots of anecdotes do mean data some times!

Trying to edit and messed up...

You could if necessary, fly Barcelona to Malaga..About 30€in June right now...Would cut out 2 days of driving....Not sure if you know about toll roads in Spain but the savings from flying will offset the tolls!....

There is no problem renting a car in Spain, I've done it, and so many others have as well. As always, plan this in advance.

How far you go is up to you. I could easily spend all that time and not leave Catalonia (which is partially in France, btw. Perpignan and Barcelona are the twin capitals). That's what I would do. Many people travel to Spain without seeing Madrid, don't sweat it.

Hi geopeotic, thanks for the wiki links! They are really useful. Looks like i dont have to go too far for all the medieval sights and villages. Driving all the way was our initial choice but i was afraid that we might waste alot of time driving instead of taking the high speed rail. But if there are so many promising sights to see near barcelona, we might not need to take the train anymore.
