My wife and I are planning on driving up the Douro River Valley in late May. Can someone recommend which part of the drive is the more scenic, the lower Douro from Porto to Peso de Regua, or the upper Douro, east of Peso de Regua. We are only occasional wine drinkers, so stopping at vineyards to sample wine is of less importance.

I am traveling inland Portugal on a group tour in September; am thinking of staying in Nazaré for two nights or three beforehand, just to experience the beach since the group will not stay overnight in Nazaré, nor any beach town. Will it be worth an extra sidetrip from Lisbon, bus, hotel or room, bus back, just for the beach experience? I hope for not too windy: I hear the waves can be quite rough there! Thanks!
I am planning a trip to the Azores in the second half of May. We fly to Faial and want to visit also Pico and Sao Jorge islands by ferry. As we want to do some hiking, we will need to rent a car on those islands. I have found websites of some local rental agencies and they quote prices in the 25-40 euros range (per day) for the cheapest car (A class).
My question is: is it possible to get a cheaper rate by appearing in person at the rental and asking for a discount? Or do you advise booking in…

We are flying in/out of Lisbon, and we'd like to split the trip between adventure and some beach time, as it should be warm enough in southern Portugal while we are there. Planning is still in early phases, but from our research so far we would like to see Porto, Sintra, and Algarve coast.

Hi all! I'm thinking of going to visit the area of the Douro and other northern regions, for about 10-12 days next September and I'd like to know the best way to go around. I feel like tours of the Port wine estates would be very expensive and oblige us to a fix schedule, but to drive and drive doesn't seem better... is there good public transport? Is staying at one place and taking a bike a realistic option? What do you suggest?
