I'm wondering how I can get from Porto (Oporto) to the hostel at Foz Coa. I've read that there is or was a steam train that goes up the Douro. If it still exists, would that take me partway? I'I try to be a budget traveler. All suggestions welcome about getting around without a car in North Portugal.

The steam train that you refer is a tourist one that only works from time to time and I think it's a little bit expensive (tickets costs 43€ and will only take you to Regua). As an alternative, you can take the Porto - Pocinho train route (it's the same that the steam train uses) that will take you through a UNESCO world heritage landscape, the Douro Vinhateiro. It's a truly wonderful place, right by the Douro river and vineyards, I can guarantee you'll love it.

From the last stop Pocinho to Foz Coa, it's only 8Kms distance, so you should have no problem going from one place to the other. The train ride last for 3 hours and costs almost 11€. You can find it's schedule here , starting station Porto, and ending station Pocinho.

Best Regards,
Bruno.

In case my first reply didn't go through, muchas gracias from a North American living in Guanajuato, Mexico, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Just what I needed to know!

For buses Pocinho to Fez Coa use:
http://www.transpor.pt/default.asp?HSPagina=Horarios
Only in Portuguese.
When you type in these places, you will get menus of options. Select the ones with (rod) ie bus. Most departures before first train arrives. Next is at 14:30, arriving at 14:40. Ticket 5 Euro.
