We are hiking the Algarve in September and our friends will be joining us the last day in Sagres. We are having trouble figuring out how they can get from Lisbon airport to our hotel in Sagres.

Can this be easily done by bus. All help appreciated.
Thanks

Airport to Lisbon Oriente by metro.
Lisbon Oriente to Tunes and Tunes to Lagos by train - www.cp.pt
Lagos to Sagres by bus - http://www.algarvebus.info/012.htm

This is going to be about a seven hour journey.

By all means look further for buses Lisbon to Lagos but I suggest the journey will be more convoluted and journey time will be perhaps half as much again.

Wow! That sounds difficult. Perhaps they will have to fly part of the way? Would Faro be the best location.

Any other suggestions. They will be just getting off a transatlantic flight, so we need to make it easy for them.

Thanks

Seems like a snip to me.
:-)

Faro is the only near airport but even with an internal flight (TAP) it will still be four legs, i.e. Lisbon airport to Faro airport, airport to train or bus station in Faro, on to Lagos, on to Sagres. Depending on international arrival time and the internal flight time (maybe three a day) you might shave an hour or two off for the extra expense.

cheylmcl: That first option from annemariet will not take that long (7 hours), but about 5 hours.

This is the best combination, for me:

Because if they take the fastest train (Alfa) in Lisbon, they will be in Lagos about 3h42 later on. There's an Alfa train departing every working day from Oriente's train station in Lisbon at 8h24 AM and the journey to Tunes will take about 2h40m. Then in Tunes they only need to change from the Alfa to the regional train, departing in Tunes at 11h07AM and this one will arrive in Lagos at 12h06 (hence the 3h42 minutes journey).

Then they need to take the bus in Lagos to Sagres, there's plenty of them all days, and there's one departing at 12h40 arriving in Sagres at 13h35. Now, Lagos' train station is just near the marina. This is piece of cake. The Bus terminal is in the other side of the marina, so they will need... er... to swim a lot... near sharks...

no, not really. :) There's a small bridge connecting both sides, and the Bus terminal is just around the corner, first road to the right side after the bridge. Easy! They just will need to wait about 35 minutes... enough time to buy an ice cream or take some photos. lol

So if they catch a train in Lisbon at 8h24m, they will be in Sagres at 13h35. 5 hours. 25€ the Alfa-Regional ticket in 2nd class.

This is the only Alfa train from Lisbon in the morning. There's another in the afternoon departing at 18h24.

Between each one there's the Intercities train (10h20, 14h20, 17h20) but this one will take a little longer.

If you want any more help, ask.

Thanks so much for your replies. We now have lots to mull over and appreciate your assistance. MNESLCL -- by the time they arrive in Lagos they may feel like swimming with the sharks!!!

Hi there
We are now thinking to fly directly into Faro. How easy is it to get from Faro to Sagres?

Thanks again.

As far as i know, there are no direct bus routes connecting Faro to Sagres, so they will always need to take a couple of transports.

Understand that Sagres is a only a parish and the town has a population around 2000 and (this is important) it's located inside a protected Natural Park. So you cannot expect thousands of connections.

Besides the national trains, the Algarve is served by a regional train connecting Lagos, on the west, to Vila Real de Santo António, near the border with Spain, on the east.

So, either they take the train until Lagos and then take the bus, or they take the bus until Lagos and take another one to Sagres. Eva buses will take a couple of hours from Faro to Lagos and from Lagos to Sagres about another hour.

Now confirmed they are flying directly to Faro. It appears to me that the train from Faro to Lagos and then the bus from Lagos to Sagres would be the easiest option. It appears that there are several time options for them to choose. Just one more question...is it possible/ preferable to purchase the train and bus tickets ahead of time? or will they be okay purchasing the day before departure in Faro? They are planning to stay overnight in Faro to make this next day journey easier.

You have been very helpful. Thanks.

For the train, probably it's preferable to buy ahead of time. For the bus, i can't tell, but probably not.
