Hello,

We are going to Madeira for 2 weeks self catering on 23rd November.

Reading peoples reviews on the island many say they will return if they win the lottery!!!

What are the prices really like out there at the moment and how do they compare to the UK?

We will be bringing the usual tins of SPAM and BRANSTON pickle, tea and coffee as we always do wherever we go(!!) but what else should we bring that we cannot get or is very expensive out there?

Thanks for any advice.

It's definitely exaggerated, probably opinions by people who stayed in upmarket hotels and did not venture outside hotels & touristy restaurants. In fact there are some bars where local people eat where you can have a good lunch for 10 euros or even less (including drink). There are supermarkets and grocery shops with prices only slightly above those in continental Portugal. Definitely no need to take food from the UK, just avoid obvious tourist traps and you won't go bankrupt :)

PS. Don't take coffee - the local one is delicious and costs only ca. 0,60 to 0,90 euro in every cafe!

I go along with waht Mezko says, unless you are going to Reid's Hotel or wherever for afternoon tea then the prices are ok. Cheap meals can be had most places and plenty of shops. Lots of restaurant options in central Funchal.

Thanks everyone!

We are looking forward to our visit and hope the plane can take off from Exeter in these winds next Monday!

We have only packed Spam, Branston and tea bags!
