Hi,
I want to buy a pay-as-you-go sim card for my trip to Portugal. My friend has recommended vodafone but what do you guys think? Also how much is a sim card likely to be. ideally I want to buy it in Porto airport when I land.

The question is: What do you need it for - for phoning/receving calls, sending text messages - or also for surfing the WWW and sending/receiving e-mails? As you will have answered this, more people might come up with their advice.
I formyself had always been very happy with Optimus . Their employees speak a very good English which comes handy if you're not yet familiar with the local language.

I'm only there for 9 days, but want it for phoning hosts and hostels, any information number I need. So I don't anticipate much use and that will just be short calls and texting. If it was the UK I would probably spend max £10 in the whole trip!
Does that clarify?

The airport has a selling point where you could buy a 15 euro prepaid card. But I don't know from which company this is. It doesn't matter much because it's just for 9 days anyway. Mobile phoning in Portugal isn't that cheap, unless you call numbers from the same provider.

I got an Optimus card in Lisbon - there's a mobile phone store on practically every corner in the Rossio area - for 10 euros which includes 5 euros of phone time. It's easy to load additional minutes onto the phone when you need it - just pick up a card or bring the phone into a shop and they'll do it for you. It is convenient to have a local phone if you want to call ahead for accommodation. I think all the phone companies have similar rates.
