So I'm about to travel Europe for a month and plan am starting off in Lisbon.
Have booked my flight out to faro as it was £150 cheaper than direct to Lisbon and was originally looking at staying the night in faro and getting a train to Lisbon the next day.
Problem I have is that I've looked on trip advisor etc and can't see much to do in faro so would I be better just getting a train to Lisbon right away and skipping faro?

Self and Gf flew into Faro from UK back in March.
Although we were staying in Tavira we decided to head over to Faro to take a wander around the Old Town.
We were back at the railway station about four hours later, job done.
And that four hours included a very leisurely lunch and the walks from and to Faro station.
Take the train to Lisbon and enjoy - plenty to see and do.
We soent a week there in July 2015 and still haven't seen it all...
Pocket Rough Guide Lisbon worth the money...

Faro is a working city and port, not a tourist destination. The old town is worth a couple of hours, but there are far better places to spend time in Portugal. Head straight to Lisbon, if time permits. Long distance trains need to be booked in advance.

Not much to see in Faro. The beaches are good, out on the island, but only worth it if you had more time. You're better off going straight to Lisbon (where time is never enough :) )
The train doesn't need to be booked ahead, and there are several. But since it is the summer and high season you're safer if you do so. (go to cp.pt and you can buy it online). There are also buses.
One month in Europe is short. Hope you make the best of it (way to go for starting with Portugal!)
As others already said, I wouldn't bother stroll around Faro in summer and would go straight to Lisbon

Faro is a great city to spend time at the beach, but there are better places to spend time in Portugal.

Like others said.
