Hello,
Having spent months organising a 2 week trip to Portugal (I live in Strasbourg) I have just now received an email from Easyjet advising that they have cancelled my return flight (from Lisbon to Basel).
I'v e had a quick look at the EU rules - but do they count my "departure date" as when I leave Basel or the return flight from Lisbon.?
That is just one query - if I am forced to stay until their next flight in 3 days time would they be obliged to pay for a hotel ? Or would it just be a losing battle?
So far I have not contacted them as they also say any decision on my part is irrevocable!!
Does anyone have any experience of this situation and/or could advise me how to proceed? I have very little time to deal with this - was just looking forward to my well organised holiday!
Thanks all......

And you live in Strassbourg... Why bother about departure date?
Forget about refunds or paying for a hotel, by low-cost carriers like Easyjet.

You should be looking at the conditions of sale of your ticket. I haven't flown Easyjet, but I have experienced this sort of situation with budget airlines. Basically, nothing to do except to accept any alternative they offer, if any. When this has happened to me with other airlines (that is, THEY canceled the flight) I was at least given the option of picking my own return at no extra cost, even though I had a ticket that ordinarily didn't permit changes. But these sorts of things are the policy of individual companies. They don't all work the same way.
Budget airlines most often sell each flight separately, so the 'departure' (if a relevant issue) would apply only to the canceled leg of the trip, Lisbon.
Regarding hotels, forget it. I fully expect that in the conditions they'll specify they have the right to cancel any flight - typical of budget airlines. Everything else depends on the sort of ticket you bought. Some (the more expensive ones) will get you a refund, others not. Some allow changes, others do not.
So, go back and read the conditions of your ticket - most of these details ought to have been spelled out at the time of purchase.

The individual flights are separate single trips - that's the whole idea of discount flights - the reason for them being able to sell the tris cheaply - they "never" have to (never do) pay for food or extra nights at hotels or tickets for other airlines.
You are in the situation that simply happens once in a while flying discount flights, but in a very good version of the situation (not being in Lisboa airport 2 hours before departure when you get the info) - so you have plenty of time to organize another trip from Lisboa to somewhere near you - and the train the rest of the way. Go to momondo.com and find flights to Paris, Zürich or some place in Germany. Can't be a big problem - except that it MAY cost more.

Easyjet don't do return flights - they only do single flights.
So your entitlement to compensation is likely to be nil unless Easyjet cancelled your flight a few days before you were due to take it.
They will give a full refund of the booking or allow you to take another flight. They will not pay to keep you in a hotel for 3 days or for any pay you lose
Why not see what Air Berlin will charge for a flight as they seem to fly that route
Go to www.guardian.co.uk or www.independent.co.uk and check their travel listings..search for easy jet and read the articles & comments...having read many of them, I would never book Easyjet (did once, but it was an 'easy' flight in France.
