We are a couple who will be heading to Ayamonte from Seville by bus and then taking the ferry over the border to Portugal. After that we wanna find a decent place somewhere close after the border and enjoy the beach for a day or two. Our question: Finding good places to stay online is always tricky and a bit of a gamble when it comes to prices (plus we like to be spontaneous when we can:), how hard is it to find places to stay in Algarve without booking in advance? This will be in a couple of weeks, middle of june.

When you reached your destination on the Algarve just go to the next tourist office they know all the B&B's and hotels, middle of June is still shoulder season so it shouldn't be a problem.

Not sure how close the border you want to be but Tavira is lovely, you would enjoy the town and can get access to the beaches. As mentioned, will be busier but you should be ok getting a spot, try airbnb.com for local listings available.

If for any reason you end up spontaneously heading toward Faro or Loulé, send me a PM as I live in Loulé and can either show you around or host for a night or two (I have an extra room in my apt here).

have a good trip!

Self and GF had a relaxing few days in Tavira last September. Stayed at Mares down on the riverside (pre-booked), but Tavira Youth Hostel didn't seem too bad when we called in to book a hostel elsewhere for the following week. Can recommend Bica for a meal or two, but get there early and be prepared to wait a while for a table if you don't!.

If you do go for a curry, be prepared for it to be a little on the mild side. Self and Gf went to one curry house and found it milder than mild (but hey, we are from Bradford where curry is a way of life..) - was apparently a similar story at another Tavira curry house as one of the people staying at Mares also went to partake on her first night in town.

Good ice cream at one of the places adjacent to the park/riverside - flavours include Nutella for those who like their hazelnut/chocolate fix! Ilha de Tavira worth a visit, especially if there's no red flags on the main beach...
