Hi there,

Can anyone please share some tips about places to visit (and stay overnight) between Tarifa and Lisbon in late July/early August? My boyfriend and I have 5 days to drive to Lisbon (after getting off the ferry at Tarifa) and would like to stop along the way at some coastal destinations, particularly where the surf is good and where there are some other local interests (i.e. markets, food, museums, cathedrals, parks etc). We're also not averse to getting off the beaten track.

Currently, some ideas for places to visit/stay at are:
- Either Sanlucar de Barrameda or Huelva for a night (so that we can explore some of the Donana National Park too)...any tips of which town would be better for this, or if there is another town close by too?
- Faro for a night
- Sagres for a night
- Sines for a night

I know it is a very hectic, almost 'drive through' type trip, but it is to get ideas for a longer return trip next time. We've never never been to Spain or Portugal so would appreciate any tips about where we should go or avoid or spend more time (well, as much time as this will allow us!) in. I understand also that it will be super-peak season by the time we get there at the end of July so might be hard to beat the crowds but if there are places that aren't as bad as others, would love to hear them too!

We don't have a huge budget (initial searches seem to show nothing below 100 euros a night...) so trying to balance everything out will be a challenge too.

Would very much appreciate any help I can get with this - thanks in advance!

Hi scroobs!

Welcome to TT!

I'm not a fan of Huelva and in order to visit Doñana from Huelva you would need to backtrack so I would disregard that option.

You can visit the Park out of Sanlúcar de Barrameda or out of several spots between el Rocío and Matalascañas (depending on the company you use to visit the park). Sanlúcar de Barrameda is bigger and more lively.

For info about the Park, you can take a look here.

Regarding companies to visit the Park, you can take a look here, here, here and here. There could be others too.

Thanks Anillos!

Appreciate the links for visiting the Park - really looking forward to this visiting Donana, it looks incredible and Sanlucar looks lovely as well. I do agree that going to Huelva would mean backtracking again to get to the Park so Sanlucar would be the better option.

Thanks again!

I would stay in Tavira rather than Faro, Tavira is a wonderful town with a beautiful old historic centre.

Hi,

About surfing you can go to Odemira, Odeceixe, Carrapateira, Bordeira, this is in Alentejo, between Sines and Sagres.
For he Lisbon area you have the famous beaches of the Fonte da Telha, Costa da Caparica, Ericeira, Santa Cruz, Ribeira de Ilhas etc, etc ....
