Hello: we'll be in the douro valley region for 2 days in mid july. We are traveling with 2 children so the wine tasting thing, although tempting, is not our priority. We are getting there from Coimbra by car and want to end up in Porto and want to spend 2 nights in the region. We'd like to visit Villa Real, and Amarante and have no problem with Regua and Pinhao (can stop at both or either). I sitll can't figure out where to stay .... was thinking maybe 1 night in Villa Real and 1 night in either Regua or Pinhao. Does anyone have suggestions for this?

I have just spent 3 days in Regua. Regua is a cheap place to stay but rather bland. It is my understanding that Pinhao is much higher hotel costs but can not confirm since we just day tripped from Regua. Can not comment on Vila Real. Try Lamego as this is a very nice town and only 15-20min away from Regua. I know you have a car, but the Douro train ride from Regua to Pocincho is very senic. Don,t bother spending any time in Pocinchio, just hop back on the train and return.
