Hello.
I’ll stay for a few days on the Azores and intend to rent a car there. Can anybody recommend a car-rental company on Sao Miguel and Pico, in view of service and price?

Thanking you in anticipation for some helpful tips.

Greetings,...

We have just been to the Azores and rented a car on 5 of the islands.
I do not remember any names, but on Pico there is just one or two companies, so you have no choice. When you get to Sao Roque there is one just on the spot where the ferry stops.

On Sao Miguel you have loads of rental car offices, and it pays to look around, they all seem to have the same prices, but usually have run out of the smaller cars... So it is not that you have to look around for prices but rather for availability. All agencies seem very helpful and offering great service.

On Terceira prices were the lowest.

Auto Europe has 8 pick up locations in the Azores. It's a broker working with the local companies.
You could compare their prices and conditions with what the local companies offer.

but usually have run out of the smaller cars...So it is not that you have to look around for prices but rather for availability
In that case it is very likely that you will be upgraded when you book the smallest car through a broker.

We have just come back from the Azores (Ponta Delgada). We rented a car for 4 days with Varela rent a car (http://www.varelarentacar.com/) and received excellent professional service from the team there. We did not reserve in advance but had no problem getting a car of our choice (small 4 door clio) at a very reasonable price comparable to other agencies.
Have a good trip and enjoy the wonderful green island.

Hello there,
I'm planning to visit next May/June. I was wondering what price you paid for car rental (small compact or sub compact).
Thanks
David

David, the OP has disappeared. Why not try the company names provided by artemis2 and pmakki?

Okay thanks.
Seeing as you're a bit of an expert on the islands...

I have two weeks in late May/June. There are direst flights from MAN to PDL. From there I thought I would fly to Pico and use the ferry to visit Faial and Sao Jorge before flying to Terceira and then back to PDL. The public transport looks fine on Sao Miguel and I could manage on Faial and Terceira, but I thought a car would be useful on Pico and Sao Jorge. What do you think?

I'm planning to do more walking than exploring and have some ideas off Trails-Azores which look great.
Thanks in advance
David

A car for us turned out useful on all islands, as the buses only leave around 3 times a day, one very early morning, one at lunch and one late evening.

Thanks. Is that the same on Sao Miguel? I thought they might run a bit more regularly there.

HI!!!

My boyfriend and I, who do not own a car and do not drive, wish to travel to Azores for a week (30th july-7th August).
I saw you' ve been there.

I was wondering if i could ask you for some basic tips. I would be very grateful... we are a bit lost!!!
Such as: - should we fly to Terceira, Horta or Ponta Delgada?

  • how should we plan (how many nights in which island)?

  • what about moving around, how much does it cost a car+driver aprox?

did you stay in the same island (sao miguel)? Did you move to another one? How did you do that?

-also, you move sround in buses. How much frequent are they? Can we really move around in buses?

  • any other suggestions?

thanks so much!!! m.
