I am hoping someone can help me,

I am thinking of travelling to Portugal just before Easter weekend (probably on the Holy Thursday, the day before Good Friday). I would like to experience an authentic Portuguese Easter, as my family heritage is from there.

Does anyone have any suggestions about where to go or what to do/see?

Any suggestions or comments on your experiences would be appreciated.

Note that I am a solo female traveller in my early 30's. Although I look very Portuguese, I can't really speak the language though....

Thanks

You haven't gotten much response so I'll pitch in why.

The Easter in Portugal is not a spectacle like you would find it in Spain and Spanish speaking countries. Easter in Portugal is generally a family affair, and there really isn't anything special to go see.

One thing Lisbonites are famous for doing in Easter - going to Algarve to catch some warmer weather.

All sights are open during Easter, as this is top vacation time, lots of Spanish people come to Lisbon during Easter holidays. So Easter generally will not change general sightseeing.

Hi there,

I wrote up a short summary on the culture of Portugal on my website, which may be of help. At Easter, you'll have religious processions and services, but they tend to be low-key/quiet, unlike the summer saint's festivals. http://www.hideawayportugal.com/modules/home/culture.htm

On this same site, you can read up about the regions and find charming places to stay. In terms of keeping up to date, best use our facebook page (link on the site).

All the best
