The lonely planet/book mention nothing about the beaches?! How do you get to the beaches by public transport? Also i'm getting a bus from the airport to Rossio, how long roughly will this take? never been travelling before, is it ok to just go and look around as the hostel im staying at is near all the nightlife..as for the day time i'm going to pick a few places & dot them on a map.

Lisbon is such a fascinating city, its a mixture of the old and the new, something for everyone really.

The beaches are so unique, one day you might want to try a beach with yellow sand, the next day black sand and hey why not try pebbled beaches, there is something there for everyone.

have a look around, good suggestions for things to see and do.

There are three buses from the Airport down into that part of the city.

The two local buses are numbers 44 and 45, They stop outside the airport terminal just off to the left. Walk past the taxis and you wil see the bus stop clearly.Take the bus in direction CAIS DO SODRE. Together they run about every 6 minutes until 8pm then 2 or three times an hour until shortly after midnight.

Cash fare €1.30, pay the driver.

You can download a route plan with all the stops marked at www.carris.pt - I don't know the exact location of the stops but both routes run down the Av da Liberdade and into Rossio and Praca da Figueira.

I do not recommend these buses at rush hour if you have a lot of luggage!

There is also a limited stop bus number 91 from the Airport also towards Cais do Sodre which stops at Rossio. This runs from 740am to 8pm every day at 20 minute intervals. A higher fare is payable. Route details at

Sorry I should have emphasised that the Lisbon metro/underground/subway does not serve the airport.
