I have 9 days in the Azores, landing in Terceira in June and am trying to decide on how to parcel those days, probably between Terceira and Sao Miguel. So much of the Azores is appealing, but I don't want to race around just to be able to check some imaginary "bucket list". I love hot springs and wonder whether there might be a therapeutic installation connected with any of them; a spa, so to speak, but without the luxurious overtone. Unfortunately hiking is no longer possible, but I would love to do a goodly amount of walking in nature. Transportation within each island is another issue. Is it possible to hire a local driver who is less costly than the tourguides I have found on the web? They are roughly $150. for about 9 hours. Perhaps renting a car is the answer. Will I be OK booking a hotel for just the first night or 2 in each island and wing it from there, or is accommodation tight in June? I have read some great blogs and many posts, and hope that someone will be able to answer my specific questions. Thanks!

I can't speak to Terceira, but we just returned from São Miguel and thoroughly enjoyed it. Sete Cidades, Furnas and Lagoa de Fogo are all on a bucket list for good reason. Caldeira Velha is a hot spring, not a spa, used as much by locals as by tourists. Actually it's not much more than a concrete tub, but still well worth a visit.
