Hi all,

Will be travelling from Lisbon to Faro in July. So far we have booked Vila Nova de Milfontes, Sagres and a week in Lagos.

Myself and my partner have five days of our holiday left after Lagos, before we fly out from Faro. We were thinking either of the above towns, Alvor or Carvoeiro, to finish off the holiday. Trying to keep it relatively quite and relaxing. What would people here recommend? Or would someone have another suggestion?

Neither head to Tavira which is a lovely town. I have not been to Carvoeiro but Alvor is nothing special at all just a lot of high rise hotels.

Had looked at Tavira alright; it seems lovely, but it's past Faro and we don't really want to be doubling up on ourselves.

Cheers for the reply! Much appreciated.

Spent a few days in Tavira last September and didn't regret it.

Plenty to walk around and the ferry to Ilha de Tavira is pretty reasonable. Good eating too - Bica (but go early or be prepared to wait as it's popular with both travellers and locals) and the larger ice cream kiosk in the riverside park. If you go for a curry then be prepared for a walk on the mild side. If you're self-catering then there's a branch of Lidl near the railway station. Would go back again tomorrow...

Sagres was pretty quiet last year, Lagos busy during the day and the area around the youth hostel was noisy at night, as was Lisbon and the riverside area at Tavira - take some earplugs to help with sleep!

Well... lol

Lisbon and Portugal are mostly silent at night. In case any of you haven't noticed it, Portugal is a state of law. There's a law of noise. To make noises at night there are only three possible scenarios:

1) The place (meaning the building) is inside\close to a special area, which has a special noise limit, like highways, avenues or the airport.

2) The place has a special temporary noise permit, with location, schedule, dates; this place has a new maximum noise limit allowed, licensed by the municipality. All densely populated municipalities in Portugal are obliged to publish its own "map of noise".

3) Some place or some people are out of order, that is, they are breaking the law. Too much noise at night. What the law says about it? Call the police. The police are allowed to take the necessary measures so the "noise producer" can stop at once the noise. Of course there are other kinds of inspections and other kinds of fines (light or heavy ones).

You don't need any earplugs to sleep - except if you're into any of those "special areas" or in case you're too sound sensitive.

Try Odeceixe, Alentejo west coast, the most beautifull portuguese beach, about 50km from Lagos.
