Hoping someone can help! I'm trying to get to Alcántara in Spain, which is about 7 miles from the border with Portugal. I'm in Lisboa at the moment and can't seem to find any proper information on how to get there. Has anybody been to Alcántara? Anybody know which border town I should make my way to? Any other tips for getting there or hotels in the town?

Thanks for any help you can offer!

if you plain to go to sao vicente alcantara, the train"lisboa oriente/madrid has a stop there.
for alcantara(65 km north caceres),you have to go by the same train to caceres end to take a bus for this village:

I was in Alcantara but by car, a lovely little town. Didn't stay overnight though.

According to my Rough Guide there are buses which run twice a day to and from Caceres.

As for places to sleep they mention these two:
Hostal Kantara Al Saif, just out of town http://www.hotelpuenteromanosl.com/
La Cañada Alcántara 'very well-kept casa rural' http://www.galeon.com/casalacanada/

Oops, the tourist office list more places:

Thanks everyone, I found the train link eventually - although it means catching a train at 1:30am from Caceres! Anyone have any suggestions for cheap accommodation in Caceres? (I'll take a day trip to Alcantara instead of staying there) I'll be there right at the end of December.

Thanks for all your help!
