hi there,
trying to think of a nice place to go for 4 quiet days over new year's. somewhere in the mountains and not too far from lisbon so we can drive there easily on the 30th (will be tired from my birthday party the day before in lisbon!)
i thought of heading to piodao in the lousa mountain close to coimbra. anyone been there? can you recommend a place to stay?
or do you have any other suggestions?
thanks for the help!!

Hi
I went to Piodao a couple of years ago, also around that period of the year, but I didn't spend the night there. It's certainly a very quiet place. When I went, it was pretty cold and there was practically nobody around. I found the village very pretty, but I don't know whether I would necessarily want to spend more than a night or so there during the winter. If the weather is good enough to let you do some walking, etc. then I think it's really nice, otherwise you are pretty isolated there and there's nothing much to do. But if you are really just looking for a nice quiet place in the mountains, then Piodao fits your description well.
There's not heaps of accommodation there... in fact, I could only find one, but maybe there's something else too... check out http://casa-da-padaria.planetaclix.pt/, just found one review on it, but it was very positive.

If you haven't been to Sintra, I highly recommend it. It's only a short train ride from Lisbon and it's absolutely beautiful. Lots of green mountains and fairytale castles. It would be a great place to spend a few quiet days.

thanks for the suggestion on sintra :) actually my dad is from sintra and i spend many days of my life there! lovely place, isn't it? and those amazing queijadas and travesseiros at the periquita pastelaria - a great childhood memory when it used to be a quiet place and i'd go there with my granpa ;) :)
