Hi Everyone!

Myself and 4 girlfriends are headed to Portugal beginning of October for 10 days. We want to experience some authentic Portugal, while doing some surf/hiking. We are planning to start with the first few days in Lisbon, explore the city and the surrounding area (Sintra, Cascais, Obidos). We are also hoping to do some surfing (potentially in Peniche?) and then want to spend some time by the seaside and do some kayaking and hiking (Algarves?).

We all really want to go to Madeira, but doesn't seem like we have time.

Any tips on potentially how to do this? How long to stay in each spot? Something we should add? Is it worth it, during a 10 day trip, to drive up to Porto or Evora?

Any tips would be very much appreciated!

Self and GF had a week in Lisbon in July 2015 and visited Sintra, Estoril and Cascais from our base in Lisbon using public transport. We used a mix of Metro, buses, trains and trams plus feet to get around using our Viva Viagem rechargeable travel cards. Bought these at the Lisbon Airport Metro station.

We also had five days in Porto as part of a two week road trip and this included a good day trip by train up the Douro valley.

We've not hired cars in Portugal, preferring trains or long distance buses to get around and we also travel hand luggage only, even when we know we're hitting the odd five star for a night or more.

Would suggest getting hold of the Rough Guide to Portugal as this has been very useful in giving us info for the three trips we've made to Portugal over the last year.

I've just posted four pieces about our trip to Lisbon on my blog last week - www.wisepacking.me - and there are a few pertinent tips on there too.

You'll have to scroll down to the post One year - July 2015 for the first one and then scroll back to read parts II, III and IV.

Enjoy Portugal and I hope that this helps....

I don't think 10 days is enough to go on a trip to Madeira, Azores or Porto.

I've posted an article on my website about a 10-day road trip in Portugal starting in Lisbon and ending in the Algarve. There's a lot of beaches, sceneries and good food :). That's what I would ideally recommend, specially if you're into surfing - Arrifana and Carrapateira are great spots - and hiking along the coast.

Algarve is not so authentic, but if you go in October it should be ok. Try Alentejo instead, that's a really unspoiled and genuine region. This was my itinerary btw
