OK, good point--there is a lot more southwest than Delft, the Hague, etc!

We had been considering venturing into Brugges, but seems like there is plenty to see even just on the way there....
I'll have to check these other places out on a map and will inquire into transportation, see what will work with our schedule. Yes, a lot to plan!

Thanks everybody again..........this is a great site

OP:
If Belgium is also your focus you might consider a logistic combination by busing from Middelburg to Brugge (with a short ferryride from Vlissingen to Breskens.
Bus or train Middelburg - Vlissingen
Ferry Vlissingen - Breskens
Bus, line 42 (Veolia) Breskens - Brugge. Buy the ticket from the driver.

Underway you'll see some nice (very) little towns like Sluis and St. Anna ter Muiden.

If you decide to storm surge barrier and Middelburg, in that case: bus from Rotterdam. For schedules, use #1's site: 9292ov.nl

To make your planning even more difficult... ;-) ... why not consider Rotterdam?
It's a complete change of scenery when compared to the quaint picturesque towns of Delft, Goes, Middelburg. Rotterdam is a rough, modern city. It's quite ugly as a whole but has some really cool corners, interesting modern architecture, funky and very international restaurants and cafes, a huge harbour, and one of the best art scenes in the country.

More about Rotterdam in this thread, and some more about breakfast cafes here.

If you're looking for picturesque, old style, quiant, pretty, cute, 'gezellig', small... then Rotterdam is not for you.

Hello Grace6341,

Rotterdam is indeed an option as so well described by Cecilia. If you want to travel from Voorburg or Rotterdam via Zeeland to Bruges it’s obvious you need to do that by public transport as stated by Arizona.
The bus needs 1h to go from Rotterdam Zuidplein to Zierikzee. From there a bus drive takes about fourty minutes to Deltapark (formerly named Delta Expo) Neeltje Jans, so also the storm surch barrier. As there is no direct bus connection between Neeltje Jans and Veere, you have first to go to Middelburg, what needs about a half hour. Maybe convenient to store already your luggage in case you stay there. A separate one way run to Veere takes a bit more then ten minutes. Bus connections are very frequent, every half hour or at least one hour. I can recommend Veere, because it’s one of those hidden gems where everybody is looking for. Not big but just the icing on the cake. As the places are compact the stops are at close distance from the places of interest.
The next day you can continue your journey to Bruges going by bus or even train to Vlissingen and take the ferry to Breskens. The rest is already explained by Arizona. The bus arrives at Station Brugge (Bruges), very close to the city centre at about 15 minutes walking distance.
Total costs of travel between Rotterdam and Bruges this way is roughly estimated about €30,- each person. The site of 9292ov wil give you more detailed information.

So the whole package of the described itinerary will give the variety of a modern bustling city like Rotterdam and the open space caracter of Zeeland with it’s quaint places on the way to Bruges. To conclude this post I will notice that the Delta Region where Zeeland belongs to, expresses so well the combination of reclaimed land and sea, where The Netherlands are so reknowed for.

Does any one know how long the ferry takes from Vlissingen to Breskens and the #42 Bus takes from Breskens to Brugge? I can leave Vlissingen around 5pm on a Friday in June, so just wanting to have some idea what time I'll be able to check in in Brugge... Thanks
