There's a small 'island' at the halfway point of the Afsluitdijk. Looking at it in Google Maps, it looks like there's a small village there. Does anyone know what it is? Does anyone live there? Or is it something like a depot for maintenance equipment?

Hello Shilgia,
I looked at several websites in Dutch. It looks like it's a harbour/island used to build te afsluitdijk. If you can read Dutch http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lauwerszee.
To be honest I've never crossed the afsluitdijk, although it's only about 300 km single way.
It's not very crowded up there.
Best regards
Wim
Shilgia, geen idee! probably a storage/maintenance facility

It's a trailerpark/camping which is owned by ' Zeehengelsport- en Kampeervereniging Het Wad'. I didn't find much information on the net but came across this blog .
Wow, thanks for digging that up, batara. It's even more interesting than I had hoped! Look at this: it's called Breezanddijk, was originally built for the builders of the Afsluitdijk, and besides the campsite there are four permanent inhabitants, which makes it the smallest village/place in the Netherlands. Coolness.

As Batara writes, The harbour was built as a support for the construction of the dike. It got closed in 1932 and there is a monument and a café on the spot where the last opening was closed. It is about 5 kilometer from the western end of the dike. On both ends of the dike are locks for the shipping. The ones on the W-end are almost directly where the dike is connected to the island of Wieringen. Wieringen is now the northern border of the polder on the NW-side of the IJsselmeer. On the W-side of that island is a dike to connect it to the mainland. As far as I recall this dike was build to find out how to build the actual Afsluitdijk.
The locks on the E-side of the Afsluitdijk are about 4 kilometer from the E-ens of the dike at Kornwerderzand. There used to live people there, but I don't know if they still do. Their houses were build by the government for the maintenance people of the dike, the locks and the lock-masters etc.
When the dike was built it was the intention to have a two-lane road and a railroad. The road was build almost immediately after the dike was finished, but the railroad never was built. At the end of the sixties or early seventies it was decided to use the space for the railroad to enlarge the road to a four-lane motorway. This is the present situation. Of course, it being the Netherlands, there is also a cycle-path all the way across.

Interesting thread.
Must be quite challenging to pitch your tent somewhere in the middle of the Afsluitdijk, particularly at this time of the year...

[QUOTE liberat]There used to live people there, but I don't know if they still do[END QUOTE].
Nice info, Liberat.
I don't think there are still living people on Kornwerderzand. And if they do, I should blame them not to close the cyclepath-bridge across that lock when I cycled across the Afsluitdijk (ezelsruggetje/donkey's bridge = kind of brainsupport: 32 km and finished in 1932) last July. So I really camped there for one night.
