Hi Folks,

Am off to Amsterdam for a weekend. When there before I have stayed in hostels, but since am going with my boyfriend we were hoping to find a cheap hotel central - ish that is happy for us to smoke in the room.

Any ideas would be very much appreciated

You're a few months late I'm affraid. Since July this year, all hotels, restaurants and bars have to be smoke-free by law. There are apparently some bar owners who do allow smoking on their premises, but I haven't heard such stories about hotels.

That sucks :(

Does the same apply to coffee shops?

No, they've found a way around the smoking ban to keep coffee shops in business. The law is based on the fact that all employees in any branch from car repair shops to coffee shops should be given the right to work in a smoke-free environment. This means that smoking in restaurants and bars may still be allowed, as long as the smoking lounge is separate from the non-smoking area and staff do not have to enter the smoking area. This latter regulation means that you can still smoke in a coffee shop, you just can't smoke in the area where the stuff is sold as that's where the staff is.
The above is based on what I've read about the smoking ban in relation to coffee shops, I haven't set foot in one in more than ten years and don't know anyone else who visits them either.
Just curious: in your OP, were you referring to smoking tobacco or smoking dope in your hotel room?

You're welcome. Enjoy your stay in Amsterdam!

Are you sure that the smoking ban also covers hotel ROOMS? I thought it would only cover public areas inside like halls, staircases etc.

It covers any area where staff may be working, but hotels can designate that it covers all hotel rooms if they want.

So you'd need to check with the hotel.

... that is happy for us to smoke in the room

Well even before the smoking ban I cannot imagine any hotel having been particularly HAPPY about smoking in the room. Yippeee, a smoker! Ooohh wow, full ashtrays, yummiee! Yesss, burn holes in the blankets! Ahhh, finally, someone who forces us to repaint the ceiling every year!

Mallemolen, Koppermolen, Cornerhouse and Prins Hendrick apparently allow you to smoke. E-mail them to confirm (I picked up the info on another travel forum)
