Hi,

we are traveling to Amsterdam this weekend, and will also travel down to Belgium.

I am meeting some people in both countries; I have an unlocked GSM phone so I thought it would be easiest keeping in touch with a pre-paid SIM card.

This will be a motley group of people from different countries - US, UK, Holland, Belgium so I would need relatively low International rates.

My question is:

Will I need to get a separate pre-paid SIM card for Holland and Belgium, or would the same SIM card work in both countries?

And even if it works in both countries, are there too many inter-country charges to make it worthwhile?

Thanks!

Randy

No. Simply use your US SIM card if your phone can handle the local GSM frequencies. Just consider that roaming charges apply.

Thanks for the reply.

My phone is a Quad-band GSM phone so it will work in Europe. But it is on a pre-paid service, and my carrier (T-Mobile) does not support pre-paid international roaming :-(

So I am back with my original questions:

Will I need to get a separate pre-paid SIM card for Holland and Belgium, or would the same SIM card work in both countries?

And even if it works in both countries, are there too many inter-country charges to make it worthwhile?

Thanks!

Randy

Aha! :-)

It's again the same story: If you can get a Dutch SIM card that allows roaming, you could use it in Belgium, too. Or vice versa. It remains another question if such cards are pre-paid or if they need a contract. Wait for arizona , the Dutch guy on this forum, he should be able to give you further advice.

There will be roaming charges if you use your Dutch pre-paid SIM-card in Belgium. Unfortunately there is no EU-Sim card or such. Costs for calling within EU countries with a Dutch SIM-card are (usually) €0,75 per minute and €0,50 for a text message.

Thanks everyone - I guess I'll have to just get a Dutch SIM card and live with the roaming charges in Belgium.
