The machines accept coin now?
The newer ones do, but for some strange reason none of the machines accepts bank notes, so you'll need a lot of coins when travelling further than a few stations.

Aribo, I was just buying them from Schipol to stations within Amsterdam - Centraal and Muiderpoort.

SOME machines take coins-not all. And ALL take DUTCH bankcards, NONE take actual CREDIT cards-but at Schiphol and only SOME major stations-some may take foreign DEBIT cards-only if you also know your 4-digt PIN with it,.
and pray with us: they even want to make it more complicated for all foreigners by introducing London-style stored value cards (chipcards)-without which you wont even be able to enter any station, train or metro or whatever-luckily this system is so ill conceived here, that it gets delayed by years and years
