Hi everybody,

I´m about to leave for Amsterdam where I would like to live for some time and find some job in a hotel or restaurant. Is it difficult to find job there for foreigners?/I come from Czech republic/ And is it necessary to speak some Dutch to get a job? Could you recommend me some webpage where I could find some job?
Thanks a lot for any information about jobs or living in Amsterdam
Martina

It certainly used to be possible for English speakers with the correct paperwork to find hotel and kitchen work. But I don't know how much the competition for work has increased following the EU expansion and the credit crunch.

Government jobcentres (arbeitbureaus) have job databases which you can search through. The job descriptions are in Dutch but the staff should be able to advise you.

Many employers use uitzendbureaus (private employment agencies) for temporary vacancies. These include Manpower, Adecco, Dactylo, Via Werk and Luba. Some branches of these definitely used to take on English speakers, but I think that their willingness to do this depends on the current demand for workers. When I lived in the Netherlands, I learnt that if one branch of a particular uitzendbureau didn't want to sign me up, another still might. If you do sign up with these agencies, contact them regularly or they'll assume you've found work elsewhere or left the area.

Expatica is a site with info about living and working in the Netherlands.

Try monsterbroad.NL for jobs. and yes Dutch is a big advantage. I know that the Dutch have stopped some countries populace from working in NL, even if they are part of the EU

If you plan to work in a hotel or restaurant, knowledge of Dutch may be a requirement. Most Dutch people I know of expect to be able to use their own language when eating out in their own country, I suppose that's not too different in Czech republic?

Aribo - admittedly this was six years ago, but speaking zero Dutch to begin with didn't stop me being offered jobs in restaurant kitchens or as a hotel chambermaid.

Nerina, you're right. I was only thinking about waiters and hotel reception staff.

can you make something of Polski language=slavic too? there are now MANY specialised ''uitzendburo's==temporary short-time temps-work mainly aiming at Polski-ther simply are not so many Cesky here-thats about all manual labour-and no Dutch needed.
The studentagencybus (orange) comes daily at about 11.30 and 16.30, direct from prahy, at the aprking lot to where I now sit. Eurolines-is cheaper-and arrives Amstelstation. Note that Nl is FAR bigger as just Amsterdam-just as CZ is bigger as just Prahy.
