Good Day everyone,

I'm planning to visit Amsterdam over the weekend but I am not sure of the options available to me, as this is the first time I'm in Europe.

I am open to air, rail or bus travel but of course I am trying to find the cheapest option. The main factor for my travel plan is that I will only be free to travel over the weekend (leave Germany on Friday night and return on Sunday evening). And since I'm based in Lubeck, the nearest main airport would be Hamburg which is about 45 minutes.

I would appreciate it very much if anyone can advise me on whether the train would be the best option in this case. I've looked at Lufthansa and the flight (depart Sat return Sun) is about $400, which is OUCH!

Also, if I were to take the train from Germany (Lubeck or Hamburg) to Amsterdam, how far is the train station to the main city centre?

Regards

Amsterdam Centraal is just north of the center, within walking distance from many of the most-visited attractions (about 10 minutes to Dam Square).

Check http://www.touring.de (eurolines germany) for the bus.
E.g. there's a bus from Hamburg Saturday morning 5:00 a.m.

No eurolines bus Sunday night, google ns hispeed for a train.

No direct flights from Lübeck Airport to Amsterdam.
Lufthansa and KLM fly Hamburg to Amsterdam non stop.

DB timetable
From: Luebeck Hbf
To: Amsterdam Centraal

Both train stations are just outside the old city centers.

Try getting cheap train tickets - from 29€ or 39€ if you book ahead...

I'm sorry, the central station IS in the city center. The fun starts there. Walk outsight the station and look back. You will enjoy the building.
Straight ahead you walk over the Damrak. On your left the beurs van Berlage. Take a look at this building as well. All city center
