My family and I are from the USA and will be flying to Amsterdam next week. We plan to spend five days in the city, travel through Belgium and the UK, then return to Amsterdam a couple of days before flying out again.

The visa issue is simple, as we are among the visitors who can fill out a card on the plane. But I'm utterly confused by the requirement to report to the Aliens Police. According to all information I've been able to find, any non-EU citizen staying for three days or more must register, but those staying in a hotel or at a campsite are exempt as the staff will report on their behalf.

For the first part of our trip, we have rented a holiday apartment. So I am assuming we must report and register. I don't have a problem with this, but I have been unable to find out where to do this. Is it something we can do at the airport? Is there an office in Amsterdam? Or must we travel to The Hague where the immigration office is (which, on a five-day schedule, is extremely impractical)?

I have applied my best Google skills here, and failed. Can someone who's more familiar with the process enlighten me?

You can relax. That requiirement is only for people who intend to take up residency in the Netherlands. As tourists, you are exempt.

Actually, according to the Alien Act, tourists are not exempted. But, OP, don't worry: this rule is not enforced. I work in immigration law and have never come across this issue as being a problem.

Me neither.

In fact, we are among the visitors who can fill out a card on the plane: you don't even have to do that. There are no disembarkation cards (or whatever you call them), just present your passport to the immigration officer and off you go.
