Hi,
I will be in Amsterdam for 3 days at the end of June. Originally my partner was accompanying me and so we booked and paid for accommodation to spend the 3 days just in Amsterdam. However, he cannot come now and so I thought that I would try and see some things that seriously interest me (textile exhibitions!), although they are both out of Amsterdam. I would like to go to Rijswijk for the day (I can see this is possible by train) but now I am also thinking it would be great to see the Textiel Museum in Tilburg. Could I do this all in one day, and if so which train connections would make this possible? m Rijswijk to Tilburg by train or bus? If this is not possible to do in one day, perhaps make it 2 different trips over two days? I have already paid for accommodation in Amsterdam otherwise I would spend overnight in one of those places. I know there is a lot to see in Amsterdam itself so it is a hard decision to decide how to spend my time. I have been to Amsterdam about 20 years ago (!) and have been to the museums and galleries (always willing to go again though). I would appreciate if readers could advise me on my ideas, or is it all too much to do? Thanks for your advice.

You can check the how and what on http://journeyplanner.9292.nl/ (timetables and fares).

The train to Tilburg takes about 1:15 hrs. There's a direct connection from Den Haag HS station, if you start from Rijswijk station you'll have to change in Rotterdam or Delft, depending on the connection.

Thanks Dr Who,
I will look up all the connections on the Journey Planner. Would the best way of getting around on these trains be to use an OV Chipkaart? Or will I have to buy separate fares at different connections?

For every trip you can buy a ticket. No need to use (or the hassle to purchase) a ov-chipcard.

I don't know how much time you will spend in Rijswijk but if not much you can easily do it in a oneday trip.

For a short break underway (dinner?) Dordrecht has got a nice/historic/compact town (centre).

If you have any interest into textile history, you might enjoy a visit to Museum De Lakenhal, in Leiden.

Thanks Saskja and Arizona,
that's great information. I wish I had more time now to see everything! I think I will only need to spend a couple of hours or so in Rijswijk as it is the Textile Bienniale I want to see there which at the Museum, which I am sure is very interesting as well. I'll see if I can fit it all in. :}

I realize this thread is over a week old, but maybe this is still of use to you: as pointed out above, you don't need an OV-chipkaart for traveling on NS trains. However, on all local transport in Amsterdam as well as Zuid-Holland province (where Rijswijk is located) the OV-chipkaart is currently the only accepted form of payment.

I would say an OV-chipkaart would be the handiest way to travel; you can buy one straight away when you arrive at Schiphol Airport or Amsterdam Centraal (among many other places).

Thank you Aribo,
it sounds like the OV-chipkaart is a hassle-free way of traveling to all the places I need to go. It can be pretty confusing going from one country to the next, especially on a limited time schedule when you don't want to waste time on mundane things, so I appreciate the advice.
