The pancake boat is really really tacky, so only do it if you are going for a good laugh.
Most interesting street is the Witte de With straat, with galeries, museums and shops.

- Euromast is really cool. You should also visit the Boijmans Museum, it's wonderful. When I visited Rotterdam with my friends last month, we were lucky: the entrance was free. I dedicated an entire post to Rotterdam on my blog . Check it out.
- By train. Definitely. If you go by car, it's going to be very difficult to find a parking space, and expensive.
- Also by train. it's not far, you will have enough time if you start the day early in the morning :)
Have fun!

I recently lived in Rotterdam for about year, so I have a pretty good feel for the city. It really depends where your interest lie, but here some ideas that haven't been posted:
-
Grote Kerk (the big church in the city center--one of the few buildings to survive the bombing, can't miss it). In one of the corners of the church, there is an interesting display of the WWII bombing of Rotterdam. It is in Dutch, but the pictures speak for themselves. The kerk (church) has short hours, so be advised.
-
Witte de Withstraat. This is quite possibly the hippest street in R'dam. Be sure to have dinner at Cafe Bazaar (multicultural fare, expect to wait on weekends) and a drink at de Witte Aap (quite possibly the coolest cafe in the NL)
-
Oude Haven. The old harbor is the classic photo op for old world meets new. Be sure to stop by Locus Publicus for a belgian brew (near the oostplein metro stop).
Hi,
Read this post too. It states my favourite things in Rotterdam (Euromast is not one of them, boring) but as you can read below it's not a city I like much at all.
Is there any particular reason you're going to Rotterdam? Because it's a city that's pretty hard on the visitor, it's quite an ugly place except for some cool modern architecture and a few old parts that were NOT bombed. The people have strong work ethic and are not known for their outgoing nature. And somehow it also seems to get a lot more rain and clouds than Amsterdam :-) (my sister lives in Rotterdam and I in Amsterdam).
I lived in Rotterdam for 4 years myself and after those for years I'd finally found a few cool cafes and places to go, but I still thought that going from A to B was always horrible, I don't like that city, it's gray, busy, smelly, and after dark very dodgy in many places (especially for me as a girl alone, whereas in Amsterdam I feel totally safe any hour of day or night).
Den Haag is not as attractive as other places either. It has some interesting buildings, especially if you're into politics, and a few nice museums, but is rather a dull city otherwise.
If you're going to be in the Netherlands for the first time, why not pick two or three picturesque places which have the things you're looking for? You can find many suggestions by doing some searches: example 1, and example 2.
Places that are much more picturesque: Amsterdam, Durgerdam, Edam, Volendam, Enkhuizen & Zuiderzee Museum (open air), Utrecht, Haarlem, Delft, Groningen, Maastricht, Nijmegen, Hoge Veluwe national park, the Wadden islands, etc.
Oh, and I think the rudeness of post #1 was completely uncalled for. Even if someone asks a question you think is dumb, you can decide not to react at all or to point to the obvious sources (searches in the Tree or whatever). There's no need to start calling names. Would you do that if the person was sitting opposite you, in real life? You probably wouldn't have the guts.
