Hi All,
We will be in Amsterdam for four days in mid July.
Last time there we got a bus to Marken and did the ferry trip to Vollenburg then bus back via Edam. One of the highlights of or time in Amsterdam.

Are there any similar day trips we could do via public transport that combines a ferry trip as well?

I Have seen that there are the free ferries, but are there any longer ones available?

Cheers

You may like the fast flying ferry that goes from the back of Amsterdam Central station to IJmuiden.

Quite a spectacular ride!

IJmuiden has a beach as well.

Cheers,
Dennis

You could also take the ferry from Enkhuizen to Stavoren.

adding 4:
Great idea.
It's a long shot to go back by train.
Instead of backtracking take a break in the north(-east) of the country and combine such a trip, e.g. the next day, with Giethoorn. No ferry but unique boating in the Venice of the north (sorry Stockholm)

Some pictures at the right side in this link. Forget the commercial rimram.

Hi Guys,
Once again good stuff, after checking them on Google maps and the websites indicated we will probably do the three, depending on the weather of course.

Dennis, So this is the historic North Sea Canal, any particular places of interest regarding the history or building of the canal?
I will check out the timetables when I get there as the website does not have much info in English.
Strange thing, at our age, 65+ and coming from a place with miles of almost deserted tropical beaches within walking and cycling distance, the beach at IJmuiden does not have much allure, sorry :-) But the trip itself does, as they say it's not the destination but the journey that counts.

Arizona, I reckon we can fit in a trip to Pampus real easy. It would have to be a great way to get away from most of the other tourists and soak up some little known information.

dr-who, that trip from Enkhuizen to Stavoren is very interesting. Thanks for the link.

So looking at the map, we can use the train from Centraal to Enkhuizen, ferry to Stavoren then train back to Centraal? Or is it better to return via the ferry and see maybe Hoorn on the way back.

Using public transport, could we instead, include in the same day trip a return to Amsterdam via the afsluitdijk closure dike, or is this being too ambitious and better left for another day?

Cheers
Bill

  1. There is no railroad along the Afsluitdijk, so you would have to take a bus. Many years ago there was a bus from Leeuwarden to Alkmaar, but I don't know if that still operates. In that case do the following: train from Amsterdam to Enkhuizen, ferry to Staveren, train to Leeuwarden, bus to Alkmaar and train to Amsterdam. It'll take a day if the ferry from Enkhuizen to Staveren is in the morning. If the ferry is in the afternoon it may be difficult.
  2. There are also fast-ferries in the southern part of the Netherlands, f.e. between Dordrecht and Rotterdam.
I checked via the ov-website and the bus still seems to operate. The total time is about 2 hours.

Hallo Bill,
you are doing your homework, great:
+So looking at the map, we can use the train from Centraal to Enkhuizen, ferry to Stavoren then train back to Centraal? Or is it better to return via the ferry and see maybe Hoorn on the way back.

IMO the ideal trip would be like I sketched in #5.
But if you want to return to Amsterdam the same day, it will be possible.
And taking the Afsluitdijk will also be possible (bus the greater part) but will take more time (ov9292.nl).
I should not go back by ferry, IMO overdone. Only beginning and end of the sailtrip are interesting.

Actually I did this roundtrip last year with Enkhuizen as a destination in it was enough for a full day.

No time to include e.g. Hoorn because a must in Enkhuizen is the Zuiderzeemuseum that tells the story about life around the sea now called IJsselmeer. That's why you need a half day for the former fishing-town.

Strange thing, at our age, 65+ and coming from a place with miles of almost deserted tropical beaches within walking and cycling distance, the beach at IJmuiden does not have much allure, sorry :-)

I'm afraid I have to agree. But NL is full of great beaches and I often advice a bustrip for people who - after NL - go to Belgium (Brugge) and can touch the sandy beaches by bus and visit another example of Dutch struggle against water, [the storm surge barrierwww.deltawerken.com/...storm-surge-barrier/324.html]| .
Itinerary: Rotterdam - Haamstede - Middelburg

cheers, A.

Hi Bill,

I am not aware of historic places regarding building the canal.

Some extra info on the fast flying ferry:

-You can take a bike (limited to a certain amount of bikes per boat)

-Timetable:
Amsterdam to Velsen: Between 06.30-19.30 every 30min. Between 19.30-22.30 every hour
Amsterdam to Velsen these times are 07.00-20.00 and 20.00-23.00

Since you plan to use public transport, this website may be useful: http://journeyplanner.9292.nl/

Cheers,
Dennis
