I'm making flight connections in Amsterdam and have only about 8 total hours between flights. Is it possible/easy to get from the airport to the city in that time and actually have time to see something? I've visited the Anne Frank house in past years and, although that might be worth seeing again, I would prefer to just get a quick look at the city--like maybe on a boat tour. Any suggestions? Is there a way to do this without making reservations in advance, in case my flight schedule gets messed up?

Thanks for your advice!

Use the search facility (top right of this page) - this question comes on here on a very regular basis.

It does and it is. Take the train in to Centraal Station and go from there. You can walk around, rent a bike, take a water taxi and get back on the train to the airport.

Good luck.

If you're jetlagged, like a more quiet pace, consider the smaller and -also - beautiful Haarlem.

You will be surprised that the Netherlands has much more to offer than Amsterdam.
Rent a bike at http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2009/aug/18/alain-de-botton-heathrow-airport

Amsterdam is pretty dangerous for a novice to cycle. And for the non-cyclist to survive the cyclists' escapades.

Bus to Haarlem.

I like the suggestion for Haarlem. Indeed a very nice calm city with good shops, nice restaurants, interesting museums.

Other than that see all the tonnes of search results for Amsterdam layover.

arizona - check your link, it doesn't seem to have too much to do with bikes - or Amsterdam.

As long as your inward and outward flights are going well at the time - then yes, there's time. There are trains into Centraal from Schiphol about every ten minutes or so - and it takes about twenty minutes.
I would suggest a boat ride along the canals - and then a nice bitta food in The Grasshopper, right next to the boats (about a two minute walk). The Grasshopper Restaurant is a little pricey, but the food is amongst the best you'll taste in Amsterdam. Then walk by the tramlines westbound, down towards a couple of museums and churches, before having another chiiled Amstel or Heineken - and heading back to the Metropolis known as Schiphol. I just love that airport.
