Hi,
I am travelling to Venice from Rome overnight and want to book my tickets through the trenitalia website. Does anyone know what differences there would be in the seating arrangements (apart from price!) as i couldnt find anything to decribe the nature of the seats available. I was going to book a first class ticket for comfort on some "couchettes" - but frankly i dont even know what a "couchette" is. Excuse my ignorance, iv'e never travelled by train through europe before.
Can someone tell me the differences in the seating from the following:
Couchettes
2 bed compartment
Double seat compartment
Special seat compartment
Also want to know what to choose when i select one of the above options from:
Uomo
Donna
Compartimento intero
When I simply click a seat in first class as a seat, it costs 99 Euro for two people. When I click on mandatory reservation it jumps to 105 euro. Im assuming if i just booked under the 99 I would have paid for my ticket already and thereby definately get a seat on that train?
Please advise. its so confusing!

Couchettes are simply wide bunkbeds, each with sheets, blanket, pillow and usually some storage net and reading light. Depending on the class, they are 4 or 6 in a cabin (compartment).
"Donna" is "woman", "uomo" is "man", the cabins can be "single sex", for safety reasons.
"Compartimento intero" means you can book the whole cabin to yourself, for a family for instance (well, I guess!).
"2 beds compartment" must be a private cabin, double bed room. Same for the seats. And seats...are seats. Not advisable for an overnight trip ;-)

Im assuming if i just booked under the 99 I would have paid for my ticket already and thereby definately get a seat on that train? i'd say no.
I suspect that the 99 is for the 'place' on the train not a guarantee of a seat. and if it says mandatory id assume you HAVE to pay the reservation.

Generally there is always some type of "reservation fee" for overnighters.
How long are you going to be in Venice. I wouldn't bother ordering online. Just wait until your in Venice and the day or two before you leave dropby the train station and buy your ticket in advance. All the ticket agents speak English, so don't worry about communication. Don't fret over internet booking, do it in person.

Ok Thanks.. that was really helpful guys! Can i book the overnight one the day before as well? I will only be staying in venice for a day and Milan for a day. Roma TIB, Venezia St. Lucia and Milano Centrale are the ones i have to buy tickets from. Would they be worth travelling to in a day to order the tickets, otherwise i can do em on the net.
