I arrive at Rome Fiumicino airport on May 13 at 08:50 am and want to take a fast train to Florence. To catch the train for Florence do I need to go from the airport to the main Rome railway station? I understand there are various choices of transportation from the airport into Rome but you don’t need to go all the way into Rome but can catch the Florence train at a station between the airport and downtown Rome. Is this so? Or would it be too complicated? I’m afraid I get lost easily so I want the quickest, most straightforward way to go from Fiumicino to Florence.

Many, many thanks everyone in advance!

9 times out of 10, yes.
But there is a train between Fiumicino Aeroporto and Firenze at 11:08. These are the names you'll want use if you want to do your own search on the Trenitalia website.

Base fare is 55 euro. Economy tickets currently available for 44,90. But that economy ticket will tie you that specific time/train/date. You might be better off paying the slightly higher and exchange-able base fare, just in case something goes wrong.

If something does go wrong and you need to take a later train, changing at either Termini (the main station) or Tiburtina isn't very complicated. If there is a regional train in your future (not the faster "Freccia" train on the main leg to Florence, just to Termini or Tiburtina), be sure to stamp your regional ticket in the machine to validate it. Use either "monkey see, monkey do" or see how it's done on You Tube.

Just to add to the above, an alternative is to book on the spot when you're ready to travel. Go to the station at Fiumicino airport and get your ticket at the booking office there. Inside the station, if you face the tracks, the booking office is on your right - it has an electronic board above it showing the departure times of the next few trains. The staff all speak at least some english and are used to arranging journeys for people ready to travel. As said above, you will almost certainly be told to change at Roma Termini, though there are a few connections at Tiburtina. If you tell the clerk you want to go to Florence (Firenze) you will probably told what the next couple of connections are. It is possible the prices will be different, especially if one train is much busier than another. Just choose which connction you prefer and pay for the ticket. There are a couple of through trains from the airport as mentioned, but if you miss one it will be a long time for the next, whereas there are at least one or two trains every hour from Termini.

Here is the Treitalia web site. As Clementis wrote, you will have to use the names of the stations in italian, those are Fumicino, Roma and Firenze.
