Hello,

My sister and I are planning on hiking on the Amalfi Coast in mid-May. Here is our itinerary:

Day 1: Arriving in Napoli International Aiport in the afternoon and transferring to Amalfi.
Day 2: Hiking Amalfi to Praiano
Day 3: Hiking Praiano to Positano
Day 4: Hiking Positano to Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi
Day 5: Hiking Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi to Sorrento
Day 6: Departing early from Sorrento and back to the airport.

Does this look like the best hike to do or are we missing out and should we change anything?

Should we stay in Sorrento for the last night (it sounds so-so) or overnight in Napoli (if so, which part of the city)? We have a 10am flight so will need to be up early to make it (I am planning on booking a car to take us there).

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks, Linda

When say hiking from Amalfi to Positano, are you referring to the Sentiero degli Dei? It comes down from quite high to sea level near Praiano and then you'd have to climb back up again. From memory, it took about 4 hours for us to walk (fairly slowly) from Bomerano to Montepertuso (with a short picnic stop enroute) so I'm not sure I'd spread Amalfi to Positano over two days unless you wanted to fit in other things as well. I'm not aware of another coastal walking trail that follows that route (but could be easily wrong).

If you decide to walk the Sentiero in one day, then I'd consider taking a bus (or walk if you wish) on another day up to Ravello, explore there and walk down. There are a number of paths from Ravello to the coast. It doesn't take very long to reach Amalfi or Atrani.

Are you planning on moving accommodations?
There are two books that describe all of the hikes in the area--one is published by Cicerone and the other by Sunflower. They describe the public transit options that help facilitate round trips.

I have the Sunflower book. Looking at it again, I think we might stick around Amalfi for 3 nights, then move to Positano for 3 nights. The hiking looks best around there. I was going to switch accommodation every night but this will be more relaxing (not having to pack up all the time).

Good call. There is no reason to move every night, but distances/terrain/transport does warrant different bases in some cases. Plus, you get to experience different places at night.
Tiny Atrani just a short walk from Amalfi is nice too.
We stayed in Cetara, which was just too far for two people who like sleep too much to get to more of the trails than we did. Minori to Ravello was nice, as was the Valley walk around Amalfi, but we will have to return one day and stay at the tip of the peninsula. Enjoy!

Thanks, Veta.

Unfortunately most things are booked in Positano so we might "just" be staying in Amalfi which I am okay with. The only places available in Positano now are very expensive.

Or, we could switch to Sorrento for the last few days, which has much more on offer... however, the reviews of the town are not overly enthusiastic. The hiking sounds good though... Thoughts?

Your local library might have the Cicerone Gillian Price book if you want to take a look at it before you travel. I imagine you wouldn't need two books but I'm always keen to read stuff before I leave.

Have you checked AirBnB for accommodation in Positano? I think that where you stay will depend on which walks you want to take. We didn't have time to take any of the walks near Sorrento but they did sound good. You may also be influenced by getting to the airport on your last morning (the coastal road can be busy).

We also visited in mid-May and found taking the early and late buses more relaxing. Bus journeys in the middle of the day were often standing room only.

btw the morning we walked the Sentiero degli Dei, there was a thick mist almost the whole journey. Initially, we were very disappointed with this (no views) but it did lend a wonderful ambience to the landscape which was beautiful. I have absolutely no idea how often that happens.

I checked airbnb in Positano and found apartments at double the price of Amalfi, which is why I am sticking with Amalfi.

Our flight is early so we probably have to leave around 7am from Amalfi which hopefully means that traffic isn't as bad (or am I fooling myself)?

We could also stay the last night in Napoli...
