Any thoughts on whether Sardinia, Amalfi coast or Sicily would be better? What a dilemma! I've travelled a lot but this time it is just two weeks for a good friend's birthday. In Italy, I've only been to Rome before. I'm looking for tips on which destination might be best. We're going around the beginning of September. I prefer to be in smaller places, not in the mega tourist hubs.
I started thinking about Amalfi but this looks pretty expensive and it seems like we'd have to be pretty organised in terms of accommodation bookings.

Any thoughts on the following for each of these destinations:
- beyond the first couple of days, would we need to book (2 or 3 people) beforehand or will we be able to wing it? I love to not be overly organised
- are they all as expensive as the other? Or is Amalfi particularly expensive?
- does anyone have tips for good accommodation sites, like apartments etc? We might do a couple of days more up market but I think we'll look for apartments and hire a car.
I'd love to be near the sea.

thanks beforehand all you wonderful travelling types :)

What are you looking for? Certainly not beach holidays, as you mention Amalfi Coast.
As soon as we know your interests, it will be possible to answer.

Both Sardinia and Amalfi coast are two of the most expensive places to stay in Italy (although Sardinia can be cheaper if you want to stay out in the countryside but you would need a car for this). Sicily has more variety of accommodation, it is also a large island with lots to do and see, and for two weeks unless you just want to chill i would suggest moving around a little, and whilst public transport is ok, I would seriously consider hiring a car.

Yes, thanks for your help Richiavo. We thought we would get a car. I can see we can hire one in Sardinia and I assume there would be a car ferry there as well. Do you think Sicily would be cheaper? And any idea if September would be so busy in and of these three places that we would have to book all accommodation ahead?

They are all surprisingly different. I think, as do millions of others, that Amalfi is stunning. If you do a long stay rental such as five days or seven days in a village outside of Amalfi and as it is Sept you should be OK price wise. I stayed in Priano a few years back and five of us was about EUR1000 for a week. The house was stunning.

Sicily I have been only once and was a bit underwhelmed. I think that place needs a car but could be a worthwhile exploration. Have you considered the islands just near Sicily? I would love to go there.

Sardegna is beautiful, so many options and incredibly varied. I would go back, focus on the north and stay around Emerald Coast.

Overall though I think Amalfi coast has the best options especially if you combine with Naples, Pompei and Capri.

Oh and yes Amalfi has great hiking.

Amalfi is for sure the easiest to combine with Rome.

Sardinia has the best beaches.

Sicily has IMHO the most variety, the most interesting history and culture. .but it's also the largest.

Food is easy to find everywhere in Italy, and so is wine.

Of these 3 I'd go with Sicilian food,or Napolitan.

Weather should be nice in all 3....with luck;-)

You don't NEED a car in any
But it can be quite useful in Sicily, and very useful in Sardinia. ..depends where exactly you want to go.

In general driving in Italy is a good idea in the countryside, the mountains etc...Not usually for the beach, and almost never in the cities.

Hey lucapal, do you mean that Sicily, being the biggest, is also the busiest in terms of tourists?
