Hey guys,
We are coming from Rome into the Naples area for a few day and we fly out of Naples to Paris. My question is, where would you recommend I stay? I've heard that Naples is okay and Sorrento is a better base to explore the Amalfi Coast. We would like to see the Blue Grotto, Capri, Pompei and maybe Vesuvius. Would it be more economical time wise to be in Naples or Sorrento? Money isn't a huge thing but it would be nice to be budget conscious. Thanks
Jayce

I would stay in Sorrento. Naples is so hectic and finding a nice place to stay on a budget can be a bit challenging. Sorrento is relaxed but filled with tourists. The transportation connections are a breeze from Sorrento.
It depends on your likes/dislikes - you can visit all the places you mention easily from either place.
Naples is a big bustling metropolis with all the ups and downs of that while Sorrento is a resort which is just about totally devoted to tourism. You choose.

I seriously recomend you go stay down at willys. Its a great location about 10 minutes from Amalfi. There you can relax, enjoy the real Italian culture and not spend too much at all. They have a kitchen, free internet and most helpfull, laundry. These guys are cool and treated me and the others like best mates. Go check them out. Tell them that micheal reccomended it. The steps are geat....

I stayrf in Sorrento for 3-4 nights and it was only just enough.
You can organise a day trip to Positano/Amalfi and Ravello at the local train station at Sorrento. it's dirt cheap and uses public transport.
I spent a day on Capri which was amazing and spent another day doing pompeii with an afternoon trip up Versuvius (20 Euro from memory). You can easily get to pompeii from Sorrento as it is on the train line.
Naples is a big bustling and dirty city wheras the Amalfi coast is heavenly.
Have fun.

It would be 'more economical time wise' to stay in Sorrento, as you are closer to Capri, closer to the Amalfi Coast, and the connections to Pompeii and Herculaneum on the Circumvesuviana commuter train are great. As long as you have the budget for Sorrento, you'll find it a very comfortable resort town with all the infrastructure a tourist might need.

Sorrento is gorgeous, and much more central to what you want to see. Check Tripadvisor for hotels in the old city center -- there are quite a few budget places there. (We splurged on a place with a view.) The city is fun to explore, and wonderful in the evenings. Plus, there are tons of transportation options (buses, trains, ferries, even taxis) that you can use to explore the area.

Dipend what do you want to do...if you like the museums well choose Naples..If you like to relax than Sorrento..The high season is beginnig now..so for the hotel you have to spend a little bit more...for the info about the transportation i can help you..just let me know where and when...ok? Bye!
