Buongiorno,

My family (2 adults, two small kids, a little more luggage than wish we had, including booster seats for the car) is going to be heading to Atrani on the Amalfi Coast for a few days in mid-July, driving from Tuscany via Umbria.

After a lot of consideration, and on the advice of our Airbnb host in Atrani, we decided not to do the Amalfi Coast part of the drive ourselves, so we're going to be dropping off our rental car at NAP and getting a private transfer from and to the airport (after Atrani we're flying down to Sicily from Naples).

Seems easy enough and not prohibitively expensive; I've seen online quotes for private vans for €100ish each way, or a little less for a conventional taxi. But I'm a little bewildered by the range of options. So for those who have done this sort of thing before:

  1. Do you have a specific company or website you recommend?
  2. Any you would NOT recommend? (It's hard to tell if these companies are all legitimate.)
  3. Would it be possible to book on the spot, without an advance reservation? (If so, I assume this would be a lot more expensive, so it's not likely to be our plan, but I'm just wondering.)

Grazie!

Not certain what you mean by legitimate, however tourism in Italy is a pretty well-oiled machine, and the operators are in the business of gaining on-going and repeat business. Try and choose one that will guarantee the return trip to NAP as well, has an adequate website, and responds to emails ... and will not require payment up-front.

There are other travel websites (including CruiseCritic for the cruise industry) where there are huge numbers of reviews and comments on all or most of these providers.

Personally I would keep the car, even it is just to drive to your accommodation and leave from there. Much easier.

Yes - given your luggage load, it might be most convenient, as per richiavo.

Perhaps check out Pompeii and / or the mountain road via the lovely town of Ravello prior to arrival into Atrani. From experience all three are excellent.

I guess "legitimate" might have been a strange choice of words--I was just bombarded with such a plethora of websites offering Amalfi-NAP private transfers that it was difficult to evaluate them rationally. And some look like they're just third-party vendors, not actual companies that own cars. But your advice is appreciated and I'll do a bit more poking around.

To those that suggest we keep the car, I appreciate this as well, and thought a lot about it, but we're already booked to drop it off in Naples.
